Happy Birthday, Rick Gonzalez!

Rick Gonzalez, the actor behind Ben on Reaper, turns 29 today. Happy birthday, Rick!

We love Ben – he’s the sweet-natured voice of reason (relatively speaking) in a pretty over-the-top group, but he still knows how to have fun. Both Rick and Ben have bonded with our own Jason C. – check out this interview, along with Ben trying to give Jason some soul-fighting techniques!

Poor Ben has been through a lot this past year – he’s discovered one of his best friends in a bounty hunter for the Devil, and he’s risen to the challenge of hunting down escaped souls. That’s led to some perils for poor Ben – he’s been shot with nails, dragged halfway through a wall, and spotted dressed like a giant condom. Of course, there are perks, like finally getting the pet he always wanted (although the white dove turns into a flock of demonic black birds that consumes a soul, freaking Ben out), and finally gaining his grandmother’s approval.

Ben hasn’t had it any easier when he’s not on soul patrol – just think about Ben’s ill-fated Green Card marriage to Sarah, who didn’t approve when Ben found the girl of his dreams (complete with delicate wrists, an appreciation for Extreme Fighting, and a love for the works of Sue Grafton). Sarah ended up stealing the money Ben scraped together to bribe the INS, and Ben went to jail. But we’re sure those eight days in the pokey made him a better man!

Rick shares an easygoing personality and ladykiller looks with Ben, but he’s much more ambitious than the Work Bench slacker. Rick started acting professionally right after graduating from New York’s High School for Performing Arts, snagging plum roles in movies like The Rookie, Coach Carter, In The Valley of Elah and The Promotion. He’s also a member of the hip-hop trio U-KRIME, performing as RealmReality.

We hope Rick has a great time on his birthday. Leave your birthday wishes for Rick in the comments!

Reaper Finale: Cancun

Reaper completely knocked us out with the season finale – seriously. We just regained consciousness. The combination of funny, scary, touching and surprising overloaded our poor season-finale-fried synapses. And in a week full of shockers, Reaper was one of the best of the bunch!

Tony and his demon cohorts need to check whether Sam is, in fact, Satan’s son, so they drop a washing machine on him from a great height. Sam’s bounty-hunter powers kick in, which they take as proof – since Sam isn’t splattered all over the floor, he must be eeeeeevil! Need more proof of Sam’s diabolical nature? He slaps a 50-percent-off sign on the damaged appliance. Hee!

Things start getting weird after that: There’s a stain on the wall that Sam swears looks like the face of Steve, the sweetheart demon who wanted to destroy the Devil through niceness before he was killed by Satan – and it keeps coming back. Sam comes home to find his parents fighting in a circle drawn on the patio, and his dad won’t tell him why. Later, Sam sees Steve in the security monitor. What’s going on?

Reaper: Charm the Devil

Reaper puts on a charm offensive this week, as a particularly personable soul manages to keep slipping out of Hell. Sam has to keep catching him, but the fact that he's free to mosey out of the Pit with impunity is enough to set the Devil's teeth on edge. But that soul plot is nothing to one major possible revelation: Is Sam the son of Satan?

Our soul of the week is Mike, a charming not-quite-Devil who enjoys dallying with the fairer sex. At first, Sam sees him as rather harmless - he's just having a good time! - until the Devil shows him what Mike really does. The seduction is fun for him, but it's the aftermath, full of broken marriages, destroyed lives, and quite a few crime-of-passion corpses, that really makes him happy.

Luckily, Mike doesn't seem to be that difficult to catch. Keeping him, however, is another problem. The guys figure out that Gladys is waylaying the vessel before Mike can get sent back to Hell. She's tired of being alone, and Mike is happy to use that loneliness to his advantage. When the guys track him down at Gladys' house. Mike makes his escape by threatening - and then killing! - Gladys. Oh no!

Reaper: I’d Sell My Soul For You, Baby…

Sam and Ben both learn that the course of true love never runs smooth this week on Reaper. Ben is dealing with his inconvenient green-card wife, which puts a damper on his relationship with Cassidy, while Sam loses Andi to her ex-boyfriend Greg. And oh yeah -- he's being stalked by a chainsaw-wielding killer. Doh!

Sam knows something must be up with Andi -- if nothing else, the Devil is taking far too much glee in showing Sam Andi and Greg when they're getting busy. The Devil tells Sam Greg sold his soul to be able to use the Jedi mind trick on Andi -- and the only way to free her will be to kill Greg! That gets a bit more urgent when Sam realizes the masked chainsaw killer who keeps attacking him is actually Greg's rampant id. When he gets mad or stressed out, chainsaw dude comes out. As long as Greg is alive, says the Devil, Andi will be in danger.

The guys go over to Greg's house to take him out, but they realize that's probably not a good way to go. When Greg figures out that even if he can make Andi love him, he can't make her not love Sam, he freaks out at himself -- I'm so stupid! That burst of self-loathing lets chainsaw guy come out to play. The guys eventually knock Greg out, banishing the killer, but that's only a stopgap measure. What will work long-term?

Reaper Recap: Coming to Grips

Sam still hasn't figured out that making a deal with the Devil might not be the best way out of a situation. But he's got major girl trouble: Andi's freaked out by his recent beheading of a soul, and telling her the truth is the only way to get her to understand, and the only way to do THAT is by getting permission from the Devil... which means Sam is bound to doing yet another favor for the evil one. Jason C. has the Reaper recap!

Happy Birthday, Tyler Labine!

Happy 30th birthday, Tyler! Our favorite snarky, off-kilter sidekick hits the big 3-0 today. That's right, Tyler Labine is turning 30. Happy birthday, Tyler!

We know Tyler as the irrepressible, impulse-control-challenged Sock on Reaper. He's a goofball, a free spirit, a walking id ... but he's loyal and brave when the chips are down. He's willing to put his life on the line to help Sam capture escaped souls, and we have to applaud him for that.

Much as we love Sock, we have a feeling he wouldn't be the same if Tyler weren't portraying him. Tyler always manages to walk the line between hysterically funny and ridiculously over-the-top. He's perfect in the role.

Of course, he's had a lot of practice playing the goofy sidekick. Zap2It.com's TVGal said Tyler "deserves a lifetime achievement award in the sidekick category. Just like he did on Invasion, Labine brings the perfect amount of comic relief and fun to his role. He's hilarious, loyal and you just never know what he's going to say next." We couldn't agree more.

So happy birthday, Tyler, and thanks for everything you bring to Sock!

Reaper: Girl Trouble

Sam learned that it’s a bad idea to make a deal with the Devil this week on Reaper. You’d think he would have figured that out a while ago – say, at the beginning of the season, when he found out about his indentured servitude? – but apparently, Sam is a little slow on the uptake. Sigh.

Sam and Sock

The problems start when Andi starts getting suspicious about Sam’s other life. She trails him to one of his bounty assignments, and sees Sam chop off the escaped soul’s head. That sort of thing can traumatize a girl, and Andi tells Sam he needs to give her an explanation or she’s going to the police. So Sam asks the Devil for permission to spill. Satan grants that permission – if, and only if, Sam will agree to do him a favor at some point in the future. Sam agrees without even thinking. Sam!

Of course, Sock and Ben think they’ve figured out how to deal with Andi – they’ll just tie her up and stash her in the trunk of the car! Great plan, but then what? Hmmm. Sam finally gets a bright idea – he’ll prove it to Andi by giving her some evidence she can’t deny.

Reaper Recap: Rebellion

Reaper: Welcome to the Rebellion

There was so much to love in this week's Reaper: We learned more about the demonic revolution, we got some quality Sock/Josie time, and Sam and Andi finally made out. Whoo-hoo!

Sock and Sam

We absolutely adore Steve and Tony, the demonic neighbors. Steve is so darn perky! He's so thrilled to be part of the alliance, and so pumped up about his plan to kill the Devil with kindness. It should only take 300 years, 400 tops! He can't understand why Sam might not be thrilled with that timeline.

Tony is less willing to wait -- he wants to use Sam's connection with Satan to lure the Devil into a trap.

Happy Birthday, Bret Harrison!

Happy Birthday, Bret!Happy birthday wishes to Bret Harrison, who plays soul-hunting bounty hunter Sam on Reaper. Bret turns 26 on Sunday, April 6.

We hope Bret's birthday is better than Sam's this year -- after all, Sam spent the day finding out his parents sold his soul to the Devil, and that the Devil was coming to collect! That's not the sort of surprise we'd be looking for on our birthday.

Bret's been having a much better year than Sam. The Reaper set sounds like the sort of place you can have a lot of fun, and it looks like a tight group there. He's got great dialog, fantastically out-there scenarios, and some of the funniest actors on the planet to play off of. Besides, who wouldn't love acting alongside the fabulously devilish Ray Wise?

Plus, as a belated birthday gift, Bret has a movie coming out at the end of April! He's starring opposite Burt Reynolds in Deal, about a young hotshot who becomes a poker stud with the help of an aging mentor -- then goes up against that mentor in the World Series of Poker.

Happy birthday, Bret!

Reaper Meets the Acid Queen

The boys of Reaper are after a vicious soul who drips acid and burns the faces of women who are more attractive than her. Ouch! On the upside, since she goes after beautiful women, so the boys get to surround themselves with lots of eye candy. Why so glum, guys?

It might have something to do with finding out their perfect neighbors are actually demons. Sock is all for moving out immediately, but Ben and Sam take a slightly more practical approach -- let's just avoid them! Steve and Tony will not be ignored -- they demand an explanation. Sam says they need some space, Ben pulls out the "It's not you, it's me" line, and Sock.. well, Sock wishes they'd done this all via email. Classy!

After several un! comf! ortable! run-ins in the hallway, the parking garage, etc., Steve and Tony finally corner Sam. What did we do? It's not what you do, it's what you are, he says. Steve and Tony are aghast: Homophobes! No, no, not that, Sam insists -- it's the demon thing. Even worse, say Steve and Tony -- you're racist! Or, speciesist! Or fallen-angel-ist! Whatever you call it, it's just not fair!

Sam feels awful about this -- especially when Steve saves him from crazy acid soul by appearing in his demonic form.

Reaper: Sight Unseen

The guys take on an invisible killer soul on Reaper, but that’s not half as scary as potentially psycho and/or demonic girlfriends, neighbors who are too good to be true, and the thought of Sock being in charge of his own place. Can you even imagine how filthy that bathroom is going to be?

Our Soul of the Week is a crotchety old hunter who used to slaughter the people who trespassed on his hunting grounds. Unfortunately, those hunting grounds are now a (vast, heavily wooded) city park. Apparently nothing gets the soul’s hackles up like joggers, as several of them end up dead.

Sam isn’t interested in playing around with the devil – just give me the vessel and spare me the commentary. I’ve been doing this long enough that I don’t need you watching over me, ok? Sam, don’t piss off the Devil – when you do, he leaves out important facts like the soul is invisible, and he’s got a pair of glasses that can help you see the true face of evil.

Sam and the guys end up catching the soul without the Devil’s help, but with the assistance of paintball guns, motion detectors and this week’s vessel – the best infomercial food processor on the market. With that out of the way, it’s time to worry about the rest of their lives!
