Life Unexpected: Everything changes
On Life Unexpected this week everything comes crashing down on Cate's head. We really just wanted to give her a hug by the end - while at the same time feeling like she only got what she deserved.
No hugs for her in the show, though. Just ice cream and wine by herself while Lux and Baze have another father-daughter heart-to-heart chat. Sorry Cate. That's what you get for lying. More after the jump.
Did Cate get what she deserved?
Yes - Her lies were that big of a deal.
No - Ryan was being unreasonable. They were broken up!
Maybe - It's hard to tell. Everyone was being overly emotional this week.
Other - Tell us in the comments!
Ryan and Baze are going head-to-head on of those ridiculous radio show contests where whoever can keep their hand on a car the longest wins the car and that's when everything blows up.
Baze is really motivated to win the car so he can give it to Lux to show her he's an awesome dad. Ryan really wants to win so he can prove he's cooler than Baze. Yes, we felt like we were back in high school. How 'bout you?
Of course under those stressful circumstances all the skeletons are going to come romping out of the closet, and boy did they. It's no secret anymore that Baze and Cate slept together soon after Lux came back into their lives. Ryan just can't take that Cate lied to him about something so big. She argues that of course she had to keep it a secret - exactly because it was so big. She didn't want to lose Ryan.
Ryan points out this is just the straw that broke the camel's back. She's got several annoying character traits (making fun of him for proposing, for instance... giving back the ring while being evasive and uncommunicative... yeah, Cate's a peach to date. We don't really blame Ryan here.)
Meanwhile, Lux is having drama of her own. And as usual, she's the one having the grown-up problems while all the grown-ups are having teenage problems. Lux is still reeling from losing Bug, and now she's going to lose Tasha as well. Tasha is going to be sent to a foster home very far away and Lux is afraid she'll never see or talk to her again. And let's face it, Tasha is as close to a sister as Lux is really going to have.
So Lux does what we've wanted her to do from the first time we met Tasha. Lux asks Cate to take Tasha in as a foster child.
Lux's timing sucks, though. She's asking Cate to do this right after Ryan breaks up with her. Apparently this is "all too much" for Cate and Cate says no. (We were all... huh? Wouldn't that help you be less lonely for your ex-fiance? Apparently Cate wants to wallow instead.)
So Lux asks Baze to take in Tasha. Since he screwed up winning her the car, he jumps at the chance to do something cool for her. This involves putting batteries in the smoke alarms so he can be approved as a foster parent. Good for you, Baze. Way to man up.
Things don't quite go as planned, though. The social worker won't approve him (a single man living above a bar) to take in a teenage girl he's not related to as a foster child. (We were shocked... shocked!) but she would allow him to have 50-50 custody of Lux now.
Lux is so angry at Cate - for pretty much similar reasons that Ryan is - she moves out of Cate's house and into the shower-curtained-off-"bedroom" at Baze's house.
So Cate is left alone with her ice cream and wine to sleep on the couch and look pathetically out the window at the rain. Awwwww. Can we get a volunteer to go over and give her that hug she needs?
Comments
Unlike Megan, I did feel bad for Cate this episode. Maybe it's because I identify myself to her since the pilot.
I mean, I know that she lied but she definitely didn't deserve to be abandoned by everybody. Ryan I get, Lux I don't get. For someone who is supposed to be responsible and mature (at least more than her parents) because of what she went through, I find her annoyingly childish. It's not by running away every time something doesn't go her way that things are gonna get better. Let's just hope that she will grow out of it and that Cate and Ryan are gonna get through this.

I didn't feel that badly for Cate. I mean, she did sleep with Baze and lie about it right to Ryan's face. She deserved what she got. I'm surprised Ryan lasted as long as he did. I wonder what's gonna happen with their show now, though...
However, asking Cate to take in Tasha was a pretty dumb move on Lux's part. Another kid is a huge deal! And to push that on someone whose fiance just broke up with her? Just dumb. Then Lux did her typical immature thing and ran away. She does that a lot.
For the most part, I did like Lux this episode. That doesn't usually happen. She was only annoying when she was trying to make Cate adopt Tasha.
I'm a firm lover of Baze, though. He is such a great guy, and I can't wait for him to really be able to show how amazing of a dad he can be. Team Baze! Haha.
Definitely feel bad for Ryan, though. He's been in the dark about this all along, and I wish I could give him a hug. Although, I suppose it's his fault for dating someone like Cate.
