We always get a little nervous when Supernatural tries to address philosophical questions. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. We think last night's debate over the nature of humanity vs. demonkind was largely successful -- but we were glad there was plenty of butt-kicking, wise-cracking and things-going-boom to keep things moving. What about you?
We were thrilled, as always, to see Bobby -- we'll never get tired of him! -- especially when he was shooting the guys his drop-dead glare. Hee! But we loved him shooting Ruby even more. Bobby is a evil-defeating bad-ass, and don't you forget it! Too bad the sights on the Colt were off when he went after the possessed priest...
The guys took on a town run amok, just oozing depravity. The brothers suspect demonic goings-on, and they're right -- sort of. See, a couple of demons took up residence, and that is indeed when things went to hell (so to speak), but they aren't directly controlling the town. Nope, they're just encouraging people to give in to their own base natures, and humans of the town are happy to oblige. Once they develop a taste for sin, they just run with it.
What did you think of Richie? We kind of loved him - but we must confess, we're also kind of relieved he won't be coming back. A little bit of him went a long way. Still, getting your head nearly twisted off is no way to go.
When Dean goes to avenge Richie's death, he gets trapped in the basement with demon-possessed Casey - and while waiting for rescue, they get to talking. What do you think of Casey's argument? We have to admit she made some good points - there are plenty of horrific things that people do that we wish we could blame on demons, but nope, it's just us. Still, we're not exactly ready to concede that humanity is hopeless and give the world back to the denizens of Hell. There's more to us than just our baser instincts.
We were interested in Casey's revelations, though -- that demons have their own higher power and figure of faith; that old Yellow Eyes was Azazeal, a high-echelon figure in hell, and that Sam was basically the whole of Azazeal's plan. We already know that a bunch of demons want to kill Sam, but do you think there are a bunch that still want to follow him? And is it worse for the demons to be leaderless, in chaos, or for them to be organized? Which scenario would cause more damage?
Ruby certainly seems bent on causing plenty of damage herself -- she even helped Bobby fix the demon-killing Colt! Why would she do that? Is she just a run-of-the-mill hellspawn, or is she higher on the demonic food chain than we realize? We were half hoping Sam would shoot her with the Colt in the end, but he just couldn't do it. What if she really can help Dean? Would he be able to forgive himself ifhe killed her before she could help? Or is this all just a big con on Ruby's part?
Poor Dean is pretty torn up -- he claims he's not afraid of hell, but that denial didn't reach his eyes. Jensen did a great job of conveying Dean's unease, his realization of what he's in for. He still thinks he made the right choice, but his bravado act doesn't quite stick anymore. Plus, he has to worry about Sam being possibly evil! We kind of think he's getting paranoid -- he told Bobby that Sam looked cold when he pulled the trigger on the demon couple, but we thought Jared actually gave us the layers of resolve and regret, guilt and conviction that dog his every move now. He's not cold at all -- he feels every death he deals. That's what makes him Sam.
